NEW Intelligent Bar Code
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has been applying more advanced technology in its efforts to sort and deliver mail quickly and correctly and to reduce the staggeringly high number of "undeliverable as addressed' mail pieces, which adds unrecoverable costs to its budget.
Recently the USPS has unveiled the Intelligent Mail Barcode (IMB), which in the next year or two will replace the barcode that we now know. The IMB is longer than the present barcode and also has lines extending downward from the baseline, as well as upward. It offers almost unlimited opportunities to add instructions to the USPS as to how we want them to handle our mail.
There are two capabilities available today. The most popular is the ability to track the actual delivery date and report back to the mailer for each piece of mail in a bulk mailing. The second capability is to provide forwarding and return instructions to the USPS.
